Introduction

A teacher begins whole group math instruction in the classroom.  This allotted time is set to attain the attention of each student in the classroom.  Whether that be a group activity or using manipulatives, students are attracted to the idea of this lesson.  As students indulge in whole group conversation, the teacher walks around observing students understanding or not understanding this topic.  How can the teacher address the needs of students who do not understand this topic?  In order for student and teacher success, a growth mindset needs to be embedded in the atmosphere. The willingness to participate and have a certain attitude positively affects learning. The next part of the lesson is set for guided math groups.  These are intended to address issues students are having and allows boys and girls to direct learning.  Shirvani states (2005), “The most widely accepted theory known as constructivism, suggests that children must be active participants in the development of their own understanding” (p.245).
